Old-New Synagogue
The Old-New Synagogue gets its name from the fact
that when it was built, it was newer than all the other synagogues in Prague, but now it is older than all the others. It is hard to overstate the significance of this place of worship. The Gothic structure dates from the 13th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in Prague’s Old Town (if we consider the visible, above-ground parts of buildings rather than their often even older, original foundations). The Old-New Synagogue is still a functioning synagogue, making it one of the oldest functioning synagogues in Europe. In fact, it is the oldest functioning synagogue outside of Israel. And I have read varying accounts on this score, but the Old-New Synagogue is either the oldest or the second oldest standing synagogue in Europe. In any case, you get the picture: this synagogue is a cultural and historical treasure |
