Jubilee Synagogue
When the Jews of Prague were granted civil rights in 1848, many of the Jewish Quarter’s residents relocated to New Town and some of the city’s other suburbs. A council for the construction of a new synagogue was founded by Prague’s Jewish community, and a new house of worship was built in New Town on Jeruzalémská Street.
The Jubilee Synagogue (also called the Jerusalem Synagogue) was built in 1906 according to a design by Wilhelm Stiastny, a renowned Viennese architect. It is worth noting that architect Stiastny was born in Bratislava, the capital of present-day Slovakia, which, along with the Czech Republic, later made up the former Czechoslovakia. Stiastny was educated in Vienna and designed many synagogues throughout the former Hapsburg Empire (as well as hundreds of other commercial and residential buildings), including many throughout the Czech lands. |
