Spanish Synagogue
The Spanish Synagogue, built in the Moorish style, stands on the site of Prague's first synagogue, which was known as the Old Shul (Altshul). Completed in 1868 according to plans by architect Vojtěch Ullmann, the Spanish Synagogue underwent an extensive topnotch restoration in the 1990s after having fallen into disrepair from disuse. This striking building is unique among the structures of the Josefov (and Prague). With its intricate geometric patterns and keyhole windows, it brings a uniqueness and a freshness to the architecture of Prague. This synagogue was also the site of Prague's reform Jewish movement.
The interior of the Spanish Synagogue is also exceptionally beautiful as well as unusual. In contrast to most Jewish places of worship, which normally are free of interior decoration, the interior of the Spanish Synagogue is elaborately decorated with complex patterns and brilliant gold and red colors reminiscent of Islamic art. It also has an organ. |
